As K-pop becomes more popular around the world, the proportion of English in the lyrics appears to have increased significantly. This was most noticeable with girl groups.

According to Circle Chart's chief researcher Kim Jinwoo on the 31st, the proportion of English in the lyrics of girl groups' music that ranked in the top 400 digital charts in the first half of this year was 41.3%, an increase of 18.9% compared to the same period in 2018.

By group, (G)I-DLE had the largest proportion of English lyrics in the first half of this year at 53.6%. This was followed by Le Sserafim at 50.6%, Blackpink at 50%, NMIXX at 49.3%, and NewJeans at 48.4%.

On the other hand, the proportion of IVE's lyrics in English was the lowest at 24.9%.

In these English lyrics, words such as 'I', 'You', 'Like', and 'Love' were mainly used.

Researcher Kim said, "After Blackpink's global success, the domestic market for girl groups expanded overseas and the proportion of English users increased. Looking at each group, the more overseas consumers there are, the higher the proportion of English users."

In addition, pop music critic Kang Tae-gyu analyzed, "The (Korean) MZ generation has no aversion to English lyrics, and this phenomenon is reflected in the actual charts," and added, "There is no need to limit lyrics to Korean anymore."

On the other hand, like girl groups, boy groups also increased the proportion of English lyrics, but the rate of increase was relatively low.

In the case of boy groups, the proportion of English lyrics recorded 24.3% in the first half of this year, an increase of 5.6% compared to the first half of 2018.

Researcher Kim explained, “Girl groups are targeting not only the fandom but also the global public, so a phenomenon that differentiates them from fandom-centered male idols is emerging.”
